Optimal immunisation of complex networks

چکیده
Complex networks such as the sexual partnership web or the Internet often show a high degree of redundancy and heterogeneity in their connectivity properties. This peculiar connectivity, however, provides an ideal environment for the spreading of biological or digital infective agents. Here we show that the random uniform immunisation of individuals does not lead to the eradication of infections in all complex networks. Namely, networks with scale-free properties do not acquire global immunity from major epidemic outbreaks even in the presence of unrealistically high densities of randomly immunised individuals. The absence of any critical immunisation threshold is due to the unbounded connectivity fluctuations of scale-free networks. Successful immunisation strategies can be developed only by taking into account the inhomogeneous connectivity properties of scale-free networks. In particular, targeted immunisation programmes, based on the nodes’ connectivity hierarchy, sharply lower the network’s vulnerability to epidemic attacks.

Optimal Placement and Sizing of DGs and Shunt Capacitor Banks Simultaneously in Distribution Networks using Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm Based on Adaptive Learning Strategy
Abstract: Optimization of DG and capacitors is a nonlinear objective optimization problem with equal and unequal constraints, and the efficiency of meta-heuristic methods for solving optimization problems has been proven to any degree of complex it. As the population grows and then electricity consumption increases, the need for generation increases, which further reduces voltage, increases los...
متن کاملLong-term Planning of Optimal Placement of Distribution Transformers to Improve Reliability and Power Quality with the Approach of Reducing Costs and Losses
One of the most critical and complex issues in long-term planning of distribution networks is the optimal placement of distribution transformers. In this paper, the optimal placement of distribution transformers was investigated based on a complete and multi-objective function. In the proposed method, location, optimal capacity, and the service area are determined by minimizing costs (investmen...
متن کاملThe Impact of Conflict on Immunisation Coverage in 16 Countries
Background Military conflict has been an ongoing determinant of inequitable immunisation coverage in many low- and middle-income countries, yet the impact of conflict on the attainment of global health goals has not been fully addressed. This review will describe and analyse the association between conflict, immunisation coverage and vaccine-preventable disease (VPD) outbreaks, along with...
متن کاملNeed for Optimisation of Immunisation Strategies Targeting Invasive Meningococcal Disease in the Netherlands
Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is a severe bacterial infectious disease with high mortality and morbidity rates worldwide. In recent years, industrialised countries have implemented vaccines targeting IMD in their National Immunisation Programmes (NIPs). In 2002, the Netherlands successfully implemented a single dose of meningococcal serogroup C conjugate vaccine at the age of 14 months a...
